Amongst
hobbyists, South Florida kingsnakes
are better-known by their previous taxonomic
designation: Lampropeltis getula brooksi.
Brooksi are still common throughout
southern Florida and have been selectively
bred to produce a wide range of morphs.
Brooksi make excellent pets and are
a good choice for beginners. Brooksi
are usually very-hardy, easy-to-feed,
and often have relatively calm dispositions.
These thick-bodied kingsnakes rarely
exceed 4-feet in length, making them
relatively easy to house and care-for.
Brooksi are aggressive feeders and display
many behaviors that have made them my
personal favorite.
